Russian President Vladimir Putin made a joke when he said Moscow was supporting Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the US presidential election, according to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Putin’s comment about preferring Harris over former President Donald Trump due to her infectious laugh was meant as humor. Lavrov stated that there would be no long-term differences in Russia’s foreign policy regardless of who wins the US election, as he believes the country is controlled by the deep state.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his hope to meet former President Trump during his upcoming visit to the United States. Zelenskyy plans to present Kyiv’s victory plan in the war against Russia to US officials, including President Biden and Vice President Harris. He described the plan as a way to end the war with Russia diplomatically and urgently seeks support from key allies.
Zelenskyy’s efforts to strengthen Ukraine come as Russian forces continue to advance in eastern Ukraine despite a surprise incursion by Kyiv’s troops into Russia’s Kursk region last month. Zelenskyy is seeking more military, economic, and diplomatic support from the US to counter Russian aggression, including lifting restrictions on missile strikes inside Russia. He emphasized the need for a just peace and ruled out freezing the war as it would only delay Russian aggression.
