Hezbollah suffered a significant blow on Friday when an Israeli airstrike in a suburb of Beirut killed two senior figures, Ibrahim Akil and Ahmed Wahbi, along with dozens of other people. The strike resulted in at least 31 casualties, including children, and 68 injuries. This attack, along with a recent coordinated detonation of pagers and walkie-talkies belonging to Hezbollah members, has escalated tensions in the region and raised fears of all-out war. Hezbollah and Iran, the group’s backer, have accused Israel of committing “major crimes” and pushing the region to the brink of conflict.
Iran showcased its growing arsenal, including a new self-detonating drone, at a military parade in Tehran. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned Israel for its actions, particularly against children. A senior officer in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that the region was on the brink of war, suggesting that Israel’s actions could lead to broader conflict with other countries such as Iraq, Syria, or even Iran. The airstrike and subsequent tensions have heightened concerns about a potential wider conflict between Israel and Iran-backed groups in the Middle East.
