Trump promises to eliminate all taxes on overtime pay during first post-debate rally

Former President Donald Trump announced at a campaign rally in Tucson that he would eliminate taxes on overtime pay if he wins a second term in November. He believes this will give workers more incentive to work and make it easier for companies to hire people. The Trump campaign did not provide details on how this plan would work.

The Harris campaign criticized Trump’s proposal, calling it a “snake oil sales pitch” and accusing him of stealing wages from workers during his presidency. They also pointed out that a 2019 Trump administration rule on overtime pay was less expansive than what the Obama administration had proposed.

Trump’s pledge for tax-free overtime came after a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris that drew a large audience. The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 established the 40-hour workweek and overtime pay standards. The Biden administration has raised the minimum salary threshold for time-and-a-half pay, benefiting lower-paid workers.

Both Trump and Harris have called for ending taxes on tips, and Harris has proposed expanding the Child Tax Credit to provide a $6,000 tax cut to families with newborn children. She has also promised that those earning less than $400,000 a year will not pay more in taxes. Trump’s plan to eliminate taxes on overtime pay is part of his additional tax cuts if reelected.
