Following the highly anticipated presidential debate between former US President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, which garnered over 67 million viewers, Trump has adamantly announced that there will be no third debate. This decision comes despite the Harris campaign’s challenge for another debate after her strong showing in the second one.
The initial debate took place between Trump and President Joe Biden, but concerns over Biden’s performance led to his withdrawal from the race and Harris taking his place. In the second debate between Trump and Harris, pundits largely gave the edge to Harris, praising her polished performance compared to Trump’s rambling one.
While the Harris campaign sought a follow-up debate to build on their momentum, Trump rejected the idea, claiming that the challenge only arose because Harris “lost.” However, political commentators from both parties have agreed that Harris performed better than Trump in the debate.
Polls also showed that a majority of viewers and voters believed Harris won the debate, with 53% of viewers and a YouGov poll indicating that Harris outperformed Trump. Despite this, the impact of the debate on the upcoming election remains uncertain, with the race still close in key battleground states.
A majority of registered voters surveyed expressed satisfaction with having only one debate between Harris and Trump, with 54% feeling one debate was enough. The decision to not have a third debate could have implications on the final stretch of the election campaign and how undecided voters perceive the candidates.
