Connecticut Horse Tests Positive for EEE Virus, Reports NBC Connecticut

Connecticut has reported its first case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in a horse this year. The 23-year-old unvaccinated horse in Fairfield County tested positive for EEE after exhibiting neurological symptoms. EEE is a viral disease transmitted through mosquito bites, and the risk for mosquito-borne diseases continues until the first hard freeze of the fall.

State Veterinarian Erin Masur emphasized the importance of EEE vaccinations for horses, as unvaccinated horses have a high mortality rate. Mosquitoes can also transmit the virus to other animals and humans, so residents are urged to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their animals.

Mosquitoes with EEE have been detected in four Connecticut counties this year, but there have been no human cases reported. To reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes, residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities during dawn and dusk, use mosquito repellents, wear protective clothing, and ensure screens on doors and windows are intact.

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture also recommends treating camping gear with insecticide, using mosquito nets when sleeping outdoors, and covering strollers and baby carriers to prevent mosquito bites. These precautions are especially important given the presence of EEE in mosquitoes in the state. Residents are advised to stay informed and take proactive measures to prevent the spread of EEE to humans and animals.
