New Haven residents have been on high alert following a spike in car thefts over the summer. Binyomin Lieblich, a local business owner, shared a terrifying experience of almost losing his car with his 8-year-old daughter inside. Despite the increase in car theft incidents, New Haven police reported a 24% decrease compared to last year, with 649 incidents this year compared to 849 incidents at the same time last year.
Several residents, including Michele Jordan, have experienced the aftermath of stolen cars crashing into properties. Mayor Justin Elicker expressed frustration over the disruptions caused by these incidents but noted that progress is being made in catching perpetrators. Police Chief Karl Jacobson highlighted efforts to combat car theft, including the use of plain-clothes officers and detectives.
The majority of those involved in car thefts are juveniles, with 56 juveniles arrested this year, some multiple times. New Haven has taken steps to increase security measures, such as installing cameras and utilizing stop sticks. Additionally, steering wheel locks are available at local police departments, and residents are reminded to lock their cars and hide valuables to prevent theft.
Overall, the community is calling for change and for more accountability from those involved in car thefts. Despite the challenges, law enforcement officials and city leaders are committed to addressing the issue and working towards improving safety and security in New Haven.
