Teachers, superintendents, parents, and members of the business community gathered outside Glastonbury High for the launch of a campaign called Public Education Champions. The goal of the campaign is to address the challenges faced by Connecticut’s education system and ensure that students receive the best possible education.
Participants discussed the increasing challenges in education, including mental health concerns and behavioral issues among students. A recent survey revealed that almost 90% of teachers have noticed an increase in anxious students and aggression in the classroom.
Beyond the immediate concerns in the classroom, the campaign also focused on the impact on the state’s workforce. A survey of businesses in Connecticut found that many were struggling to find and retain workers. The importance of investing in public schools to develop the future workforce was emphasized.
The Connecticut Education Association highlighted the need for additional funds to achieve their goals, including addressing a teacher shortage by increasing salaries. They also called for a reevaluation of standardized testing and curriculum mandates that contribute to student anxiety and stress.
The campaign advocates for more freedom for teachers and greater access to resources like counselors in schools across the state. Efforts to improve public education in Connecticut are ongoing, with many stakeholders coming together to prioritize the needs of students and the future of the workforce.
