Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s leader, commands increase in nuclear arsenal | Update on Nuclear Weapons

In a recent speech, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un has expressed concerns about the growing threat posed by a US-led regional military bloc and announced plans to significantly boost the nation’s nuclear arsenal. Kim warned that the expansion of the military bloc, which is now developing nuclear capabilities, poses a grave threat to North Korea, pushing the country to enhance its military capabilities in response.

Kim’s announcement comes as North Korea unveiled a new platform potentially designed to fire more powerful intercontinental ballistic missiles and resumed launching balloons carrying rubbish towards South Korea. The country has also protested the signing of a new US-South Korean defence guideline meant to integrate US nuclear weapons and South Korean conventional weapons to counter North Korean threats.

Since 2022, North Korea has accelerated its weapons testing activities and threatened to launch strikes against the US and South Korea. The country currently possesses around 50 nuclear warheads, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), though the exact number is unknown. North Korea is facing international sanctions due to its nuclear and missile programmes, with the last known nuclear test taking place in 2017.

The US and South Korea have responded to North Korea’s threats by expanding military drills, which North Korea views as invasion rehearsals. While US and South Korean officials have stated they do not intend to attack North Korea, tensions in the region remain high as North Korea continues to enhance its nuclear capabilities.
