Israeli military confirms death of American in West Bank

The Israeli military acknowledged that it was likely responsible for the death of American woman Aysenur Ezgi Eygi during a protest in the West Bank, which the United States condemned as unprovoked and unjustified. Eygi, a recent graduate of the University of Washington, was killed during a demonstration against settlements. The IDF stated that Eygi was hit unintentionally while targeting the protest instigator, despite her family claiming she was peacefully demonstrating. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for fundamental changes in the way Israeli security forces operate in the West Bank.

Washington has urged Israel to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into Eygi’s death, but it is unclear if a U.S.-led investigation will be initiated. The IDF has launched an internal investigation, and an autopsy request has been submitted for Eygi’s body. Israel is facing scrutiny over settler violence in the West Bank, with an International Court of Justice ruling against its practices in Palestinian territories. The FBI is also investigating the 2022 killing of veteran Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the West Bank, which Israel initially blamed on Palestinian gunmen but later admitted was likely caused by an Israeli soldier.

Despite the ongoing FBI probe, Israel has not cooperated with the investigation, and no Israeli military personnel have been prosecuted in connection with Abu Akleh’s death. This incident, along with Eygi’s killing, highlights the tensions and violence in the West Bank and calls for accountability and transparency from Israeli security forces in their operations in the region.
