Couple in Watertown Sent Hate-Filled Letter and Vandalized Pride Flag

Watertown, Conn. (WTNH) – Watertown police are investigating an incident where a vandal ripped out a Pride flag and political signs from a couple’s house. Chris Cole, one of the homeowners, discovered the damage after finding a letter filled with hateful language in their mailbox. The incident was captured on a Ring doorbell camera.

The vandalism occurred after the couple received a letter postmarked from “Americans That Care” and addressed to the “current occupants,” containing misogynistic, racist, and homophobic content. Watertown Police Chief Joshua Bernegger stated that while the incident does not appear to be a hate crime, it was politically motivated.

The couple had previously experienced harassment in the form of someone driving onto their property and pulling down political signs. Cole stated that they have never had any issues in the 14 years they have lived in the house.

In response to the incident, Cole and his husband have put up new signs and are determined not to be silenced. Despite feeling concerned about the situation, they continue to stand by their beliefs.

Watertown police are actively investigating the incident and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Chief Bernegger mentioned that at this time, the incident is considered an isolated case. The couple hopes that by speaking out, they can raise awareness about the importance of respecting different opinions while living in a peaceful society.
