Communities across Connecticut are preparing to honor the 161 victims with ties to the state who lost their lives during the September 11th terrorist attacks. This year marks 23 years since nearly 3,000 individuals were killed in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Various memorial services are planned throughout Connecticut, including in Danbury, East Hartford, Groton, Milford, Norwalk, Ridgefield, Wallingford, and Wilton.
In Danbury, the annual ceremony will take place at Elmwood Park, home to the city’s Sept.11 monument. Goodwin University in East Hartford will host a ceremony at the Connecticut Fallen Star Memorial on campus. The Southeastern Connecticut Navy community in Groton will hold a flag retirement ceremony at the Historic Ship Nautilus & Submarine Force Museum. Milford will have a ceremony of song and prayer at the city hall grounds, while Norwalk’s memorial ceremony will be at city hall. Ridgefield and Wilton are also organizing their annual ceremonies to pay tribute to the victims.
If there is a 9/11 memorial event happening in Connecticut that is not on the list, individuals are encouraged to email the information to jenn.brink@wtnh.com. These events serve as important opportunities for communities to come together and remember those who lost their lives during the tragic events of 9/11.
