Nine Chicago-area mayors have sent a letter to President Joe Biden requesting a pardon for former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who pleaded guilty in 2013 to misusing campaign funds. The mayors highlighted Jackson Jr.’s dedication to his constituents and noted that he deserves a second chance.
The push for a pardon comes in the aftermath of Biden’s son, Hunter, pleading guilty to federal tax charges. The White House has confirmed that President Biden will not pardon his son. The White House has not commented on the mayors’ request regarding Jackson Jr.
This is not the first time officials have asked Biden to pardon Jackson Jr. Members of Congress, including Jackson Jr.’s successor Rep. Robin Kelly, have also supported the idea. Jesse Jackson Sr. has also advocated for his son’s pardon.
Biden has issued blanket pardons for marijuana offenses but has been cautious with other pardon requests. Since taking office, he has pardoned 25 people, compared to the more than 140 pardons issued by former President Donald Trump. Presidents typically issue more pardons in their final days in office, as seen with Trump’s flurry of pardons before leaving office.
The story was first reported by NBC News and highlights the ongoing debate over presidential pardon powers and the issue of second chances for individuals convicted of crimes.
