Scottie Scheffler is on the cusp of completing a remarkable season with a FedEx Cup title and its $25 million prize after extending his lead to five shots over Collin Morikawa in the Tour Championship at East Lake. Scheffler had four birdies over his last five holes in the third round, with Morikawa birdieing three of his last four holes to stay on his heels. Scheffler, who has been dominating the tournament, emphasized the importance of staying patient and in the moment as he heads into the final round. Theegala, despite a two-shot penalty early on, managed to score seven birdies on the back nine, putting him nine shots behind Scheffler.
Morikawa and Scheffler, who have competed against each other in various tournaments this season, also played in the final group at the Masters, with Scheffler emerging victorious. Despite being five shots behind, Morikawa is not giving up hope and plans to put everything he has into the final 24 hours of the season. Xander Schauffele, the British Open and PGA champion, struggled in the third round and was unable to make up ground, falling 10 shots behind Scheffler.
The FedEx Cup winner will walk away with $25 million, with second place receiving $12.5 million and third place $7.5 million. With Scheffler in the lead by a considerable margin, the remaining players are now competing for substantial cash prizes as they head into the final round.
