Ukrainian Paralympian and infantry officer Dmytro Melnyk left his platoon of 35 soldiers on the front lines of the war against Russia to compete in the Paralympic Games in Paris. Unable to communicate with them due to the ongoing conflict, he can only hope they are safe upon his return. Despite the hardships and constant stress of the war, Melnyk’s dedication to his team and sport remains unwavering.
Teammate Yevhenii Korinets, who was injured in a mine blast in 2023, also served in the war and expressed pride in having Melnyk compete alongside them in Paris. Although Ukraine’s first group-stage match ended in a loss to Iran, the team’s presence at the Paralympics serves as a symbol of resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
As the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate, with Russia using Iranian drones to target Ukrainian cities, Melnyk and the Ukrainian team are determined to show the world that they will not be intimidated by acts of terrorism and violence. Despite the challenges they face, they remain focused on their pursuit of medals and standing together in solidarity as a nation.
With a heartfelt message urging the world to not live in fear, Melnyk and his teammates demonstrate their courage and determination to keep fighting, both on the battlefield and on the volleyball court in Paris.
