Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, suffers upset loss to Alexei Popyrin in U.S. Open

Defending champion Novak Djokovic was eliminated from the U.S. Open in the third round by Alexei Popyrin, ending his chance at winning 25 Grand Slam singles titles. This marks the first year since 2017 that Djokovic has not won a major championship. The loss also makes 2024 the first season since 2002 in which none of the Big Three of men’s tennis – Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer – earned a Slam trophy. Djokovic’s elimination was his worst showing at the U.S. Open since 2006.
Popyrin, who had never beaten Djokovic before, went on to win in four sets after breaking Djokovic five times and making impressive shots throughout the match. Djokovic looked physically sluggish and emotionally flat during the game, possibly experiencing residual fatigue from winning an Olympic gold medal earlier in August. Popyrin will now face Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals, seeking his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Djokovic’s early exit from the U.S. Open came as a surprise to many, with Popyrin’s strong performance and determination leading to his victorious upset.
