EU Member States Nominate Candidates for European Commissioner
As the deadline for nominations for European Commissioners approached on 30 August, key candidates from various EU member states emerged.
Bulgaria proposed former Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva and former Ecology Minister Julian Popov as their candidates, making them the only country to fulfill European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s request for both male and female nominees.
In Italy, Raffaele Fitto, with a long political career, was announced as the EU commissioner. From Maglie in Lecce, he has held various positions in politics and now joins the European Commission.
Denmark nominated Dan Jørgensen, a social democrat, for the second team of EU commissioners. Jørgensen, with experience as a Member of the European Parliament, was part of a cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
Belgium, amidst political turmoil, has yet to elect a commissioner and is expected to appoint a male candidate, contrary to von der Leyen’s call for gender balance. Few female candidates have been nominated for the role of European Commissioner so far.
These nominations highlight the diverse range of candidates being put forward by EU member states for the upcoming European Commission, showcasing a mix of political experience and gender representation.
