Billionaire Elon Musk, known for his outspoken views and controversial statements, has come under scrutiny for his criticism of voting by mail despite having used this method to cast his ballot twice while living in California. Records obtained by NBC News show that Musk voted by mail in both the 2016 presidential election and the 2018 midterm election. While he had a sparse voting history in the state, Musk became eligible to vote when he became a U.S. citizen in 2002 but did not cast his first ballot until 14 years later.
Musk has been a vocal critic of voting by mail, claiming it encourages election fraud despite evidence to the contrary. He has made false and misleading statements on social media about the voting process in the U.S. and has faced backlash for his views.
Despite his criticism of voting by mail, Musk’s Super PAC, America PAC, has encouraged absentee voting in swing states, including Wisconsin. The billionaire entrepreneur has also switched his political support from the Democratic party to the Republican party in recent years. Musk has endorsed former President Donald Trump in his bid to return to the White House.
After moving to Texas, Musk continued to vote by absentee ballot and has been registered to vote in Brownsville, where his company SpaceX operates. His shifting political views and voting history have raised questions about his stance on election integrity.
