Ukraine has issued a warning to Belarus, stating that any violation of its state border will be met with all necessary measures to exercise the right to self-defense. This comes as Belarusian Armed Forces are concentrating personnel and weaponry along Ukraine’s northern border, prompting Kyiv to urge Minsk to withdraw forces away from the border. In a statement, Ukraine’s foreign ministry warned that troop concentrations, military facilities, and supply routes in Belarus would become legitimate targets for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the event of a border violation.
The presence of former Wagner PMC troops in the area was also noted by Kyiv. With a 1,084 km-long border shared between Ukraine and Belarus, military exercises in the border area are seen as posing a “global security” threat due to the proximity of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant. This is the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster.
Belarus had previously allowed Russian troops to use its territory as a launchpad for their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The escalating tensions between Ukraine and Belarus highlight the continued volatility in the region. The situation is being closely monitored by international observers and the potential for conflict remains a concern for the international community.
