Chenoa Nickerson, a 33-year-old visitor to Grand Canyon National Park, was tragically swept away in a flash flood along the Colorado River. Her body was found near river mile 176 on Sunday, nearly 20 miles from where she went missing in Havasu Canyon. Nickerson was swept into Havasu Creek during the flood, which occurred on Thursday afternoon. Her husband was rescued by rafters, while some hikers in the area were stranded and had to be rescued with a helicopter. The Havasupai Tribe expressed their condolences to Nickerson’s family and friends, and the tribe closed Havasupai Falls in response to the tragedy. The National Park Service Search and Rescue team worked tirelessly to locate Nickerson’s body, and her family expressed gratitude for their efforts. The area where the flash flood occurred is known to experience late-summer thunderstorms, with more rain in the forecast for the week following Nickerson’s disappearance. Ultimately, 100 people were rescued in the aftermath of the flood. The community surrounding Grand Canyon National Park came together to support the family, first responders, and tribes affected by the tragedy.
