Former President Donald Trump suggested that he may back out of the scheduled ABC News debate with Vice President Kamala Harris on Sept. 10 because he believes the network is hostile towards Republicans. Trump claimed he wants a fair debate with tough questions, but he criticized ABC for potential rule changes and accused Harris of being unable to answer questions. The negotiations for the debate rules hit an impasse over disagreements on microphone usage, with Harris’ campaign wanting both candidates to have hot microphones for real-time responses. A Trump campaign spokesman argued that the agreed-upon rules should be maintained and accused the Harris campaign of wanting to give her a cheat-sheet. The dispute over the debate rules comes after Trump criticized ABC for what he viewed as a biased interview on “This Week.” Trump initially proposed debating on Fox News instead but eventually agreed to face Harris in three debates, with only the ABC debate confirmed so far. This election cycle marks the first time the Commission on Presidential Debates is not sponsoring the presidential debates, with both the Republican National Committee and the Biden campaign choosing not to participate in CPD-sponsored debates. The Harris vs. Trump debate is currently the only confirmed debate between the two candidates.
