Waterbury police have made a fourth arrest in connection to the murder of 18-year-old Joseph Zavala last year. Jada Ellis, 20, was identified as a suspect in the homicide and was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and weapons in a motor vehicle. She was taken into custody in Bristol on Aug. 23 and is being held on a $250,000 bond pending court arraignment.
Previous arrests in this case include Terron McCray of Hartford, Duane Mercer of Waterbury, and Nigel Robinson of Waterbury, all of whom were between 16 and 20 years old at the time of their arrests. Zavala was dropped off at Saint Mary’s Hospital with a gunshot wound on Nov. 18 and died a few days later from his injuries. Police have stated that they believe gang activity was related to the shooting.
The community in Waterbury has been shaken by this tragic incident, and the continued arrests in connection to Zavala’s death show that law enforcement is diligently working to bring those responsible to justice. The cooperation between law enforcement agencies in Waterbury and Bristol highlights the commitment to solving this case and ensuring that the streets are safer for residents. As the investigation continues, the community is hopeful for closure in this case and for justice to be served for Joseph Zavala and his loved ones.
