A Norwalk police officer was injured and taken to the hospital after an impaired driver struck his police cruiser late Friday night. The incident occurred when 55-year-old Carlos Gavilano was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee and collided with the cruiser on Main Street. Gavilano fled the scene but was later found nearby after his vehicle was disabled from the crash. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Norwalk Hospital. It was later discovered that Gavilano had also hit another vehicle prior to hitting the police cruiser. Gavilano is facing charges including driving under the influence, evading responsibility resulting in physical injury, and failure to maintain the proper lane. He is being held on a $25,000 bond and will appear in court on September 6. The Norwalk Police Department is urging drivers to never drive under the influence and to always stay at the scene of an accident. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of following traffic laws to ensure the safety of all road users.
