The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has encountered a setback in its efforts to receive the first delivery of mpox vaccines this week, as global health authorities stress the importance of a coordinated response to prevent the spread of the disease. Despite earlier optimism expressed by the DRC health minister about receiving vaccine deliveries soon, the country now faces delays as additional processes need to be followed before the vaccines can arrive. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the need for a comprehensive and coordinated action to control and stop the outbreaks in the DRC and neighboring countries.
Various nations, including Germany, have pledged assistance in the form of vaccine donations to help combat the virus, which has already affected thousands of people and resulted in hundreds of deaths in multiple African nations. The WHO is increasing its staffing in impacted countries and has announced a six-month plan that requires $135 million in funding to ensure greater access to vaccines and improve prevention and response efforts.
Plans to strategically vaccinate individuals at the highest risk, including close contacts of recent cases and healthcare workers, are underway to interrupt transmission chains. The WHO has reiterated the importance of collective efforts in containing the spread of the virus and preventing further outbreaks. A funding appeal will be launched shortly to support the implementation of the plan and address the urgent need for resources to combat the disease effectively.
