Dairy company in New Zealand fined for using Indian butter in products | Food

A New Zealand dairy company, Milkio Foods Limited, has been fined $261,452 for using imported Indian butter in products falsely labelled as “100 percent pure New Zealand”. The Commerce Commission found that Milkio misled customers about the origin of the butter used in its ghee products and also illegally used the FernMark logo to identify them as New Zealand-made. The Commission’s General Manager, Vanessa Horne, emphasized the importance of holding the company accountable due to New Zealand’s reputation for high-quality dairy products. She stated that Milkio exploited this reputation by promoting their products with misleading claims about their origin. The prosecution serves as a warning to others who may be seeking to falsely claim the New Zealand brand. New Zealand’s dairy industry is a significant revenue generator for the country, with exports accounting for over 95 percent of its dairy production. The dairy sector is a key export industry, with Kiwi producers exporting billions of dollars’ worth of dairy products annually. Milkio did not respond to requests for comment.
