Police in Akron, Ohio, released body camera and security video showing the fatal shooting of Michael Jones, a 54-year-old man suspected of stealing a U-Haul box truck. The incident occurred on August 17 at a gas station, where police were investigating a stolen vehicle. Jones was shot by an Akron police veteran, who has been placed on paid administrative leave. The body camera footage shows an officer approaching Jones in the driver’s seat of the U-Haul, attempting to arrest him. A struggle ensues, and Jones drives away, prompting the officer to fire two shots, resulting in Jones’ death. The officers administered first aid, but Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation by the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is ongoing, and the case will be reviewed by the state attorney general’s office and the Summit County Grand Jury. The Akron Police Department is also conducting an internal investigation. Mayor Shammas Malik expressed condolences to Jones’ family and emphasized the importance of open conversations about public safety.
Jones’ children, represented by attorney Bobby DiCello, expressed devastation at the incident, questioning the use of force by the officers. They are seeking justice for their father and urging accountability from the City of Akron. The video footage and witness statements are being used to assess the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
