Walmart has issued a recall of nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice due to potentially harmful levels of arsenic, according to the Food and Drug Administration. This recall applies to Great Value brand apple juice sold in six-packs of 8-ounce bottles with a UPC code of 0-78742-29655-5 and a “best if used by” date of December 28, 2024. The juices were found to have arsenic levels slightly above the FDA’s recommended limit of 10 parts per billion.
Class II recalls were issued by the FDA, indicating that the product may cause temporary adverse health effects. Arsenic is a naturally occurring mineral that can be toxic to humans, with inorganic arsenic being more harmful than the naturally occurring form. While low levels of arsenic are common in food products, elevated levels can cause symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, numbness, and muscle cramping.
The recall was initiated on August 15, but the urgency was increased by the FDA on Friday. The recalled apple juices were sold in several states and Puerto Rico. Despite the arsenic levels slightly exceeding the recommended limit, the FDA does not expect severe health consequences from consuming the recalled juice bottles. The Environmental Protection Agency has classified inorganic arsenic as a carcinogen.
