Ohio Sen. JD Vance, a former running mate of President Donald Trump, avoided questions about the possibility of family separations under Trump’s proposed “zero tolerance” immigration policy in an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”
Vance emphasized the need to stop illegal immigration before implementing mass deportations, criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris for policies he claimed led to family separations. He stressed the deportation of violent criminals as a priority under Trump’s plan.
During Trump’s recent visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, he also evaded questions about family separations under his proposed policy, instead mentioning provisions for mixed-status families without elaborating.
The Biden administration had previously rescinded the zero-tolerance policy and established a family reunification task force to address the more than 5,000 families separated under the Trump administration.
Concerns have been raised about the potential impact of Trump’s immigration policies on families, but bipartisan efforts to address comprehensive immigration reform have faced challenges following Trump’s disapproval of the plan.
Vance’s comments echo Trump’s rhetoric on immigration, highlighting the divisive nature of the issue as the debate continues in Washington.
