Two people are missing and two others seriously injured after an ice cave collapsed in south-east Iceland during a tour group’s visit. The incident occurred at the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, where a group of 25 people were exploring with a guide. Four individuals were trapped under the ice, with two already rescued but suffering from serious injuries. The search is ongoing for the remaining two people stuck in the cave.
Authorities have dispatched helicopters from the country’s coastguard, as well as ambulances and police, to the scene. The glacier is located near the popular tourist destination Jökulsárlón, known for its glacial lagoon.
This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can come with exploring ice caves and glaciers, especially as climate change continues to impact these environments. Visitors are urged to always follow safety guidelines and recommendations provided by experienced guides when exploring such areas.
The Icelandic authorities are working to ensure the safety of those involved in the accident and are continuing their search and rescue efforts. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this challenging time.
