The jersey worn by Babe Ruth during his famous “called shot” in the 1932 World Series sold at auction for over $24 million. The New York Yankee slugger’s jersey set a record-breaking price, surpassing Mickey Mantle’s rookie card sold in 2022. Heritage Auctions, who handled the sale, described the jersey as the most significant piece of American sports memorabilia ever offered at auction. Ruth’s iconic moment came during Game 3 of the World Series against the Chicago Cubs, where he pointed to center field before hitting a home run off Cubs pitcher Charlie Root. The Yankees went on to win the game and the series, making it Ruth’s last World Series appearance. Despite ongoing debate over whether Ruth truly called his shot, historical footage supports the claim. The jersey was given to Ruth’s golfing buddy in Florida around 1940 and stayed in their family until being sold at auction in 2005. It then went on to a private collection before being consigned to Heritage this year. Michael Gibbons, director emeritus and historian at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum, hailed Ruth as a positive figure for the country and a standard-bearer for Major League Baseball. The buyer of the jersey remains anonymous, but the legacy of Babe Ruth and his called shot continue to captivate sports fans worldwide.
