The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have conducted air strikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, claiming it was a pre-emptive action in self-defence to prevent an imminent attack from Hezbollah. The IDF warned of an extensive Hezbollah response and a potential escalation into all-out war, urging Lebanese civilians to evacuate from areas where Hezbollah is operating. Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister called for an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the situation, with reports of casualties and fires in Lebanon due to the Israeli airstrikes.
Hezbollah retaliated by firing over 320 rockets, hitting Israeli military sites and launching drones into northern Israel. This escalation follows tensions ignited by Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders. Israel’s Defence Minister declared a state of emergency and the government assured the US of the defensive nature of its airstrikes. Hezbollah claimed that the Israeli strikes did not affect their operations.
Despite Israel sustaining minimal damage from the rocket attacks, the situation remains tense, with flights briefly suspended at Ben Gurion airport. The attacks occurred as Egypt hosts talks to end Israel’s conflict with Hamas. Israeli officials have vowed to defend against any threats, while the world watches anxiously to see if the cycle of attacks can be contained, preventing a wider regional conflict. Diplomatic efforts continue to try and de-escalate the situation, with world leaders closely monitoring the developments in the region.
