A woman who went missing while swimming in the Niantic River in East Lyme prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving fire departments, police, helicopters, K9s, and civilians. The East Lyme Police Department launched a marine rescue after receiving reports of four intoxicated females at a dock at Cini Memorial Park on Saturday night. Upon arrival, officers found all four women in the water and instructed them to come ashore. While three women complied, one refused to exit the water and was eventually located on shore early Sunday morning. The woman’s intoxicated state and distance from shore necessitated the marine rescue operation.
Numerous agencies contributed to the search effort, including the Niantic Fire Department, Waterford Fire Departments, Coast Guard units, D.E.E.P. officers with K9s, and various local fire departments. Civilians and volunteers also joined the search, reflecting the community’s dedication to ensuring the woman’s safety. The collaborative efforts of all involved ultimately led to a successful outcome, with the missing woman being found and brought to shore. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prompt and coordinated responses in emergency situations, as well as the valuable contributions of both emergency personnel and community members in ensuring the safety of residents.
