French police have arrested a suspect in an arson attack on a synagogue in La Grande Motte, France, that injured a police officer. The incident involved two cars being set ablaze at the Beth Yaacov synagogue complex, with additional fires at two entrances and a propane gas tank explosion injuring the officer who responded to the scene. Fortunately, five people present in the synagogue at the time were unharmed.
The suspect was apprehended in Nimes after opening fire on police, resulting in injuries to his face. Two other individuals linked to the suspect were also taken into custody. Prosecutors are investigating the attack as an attempted assassination linked to a terrorist group.
Following the attack, acting Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin ordered police reinforcements to protect Jewish places of worship. President Emmanuel Macron called the incident a terrorist act and assured that efforts are ongoing to find the perpetrator. Acting Prime Minister Gabriel Attal condemned the attack as shocking and appalling, emphasizing the constant battle against antisemitism.
Mayor Stéphan Rossignol stated that a lone suspect was spotted at the site of the attack, attempting to enter the synagogue and carrying a Palestinian flag and a weapon. Security videos are being reviewed as part of the investigation. The incident has sparked outrage and concern, with measures being taken to ensure the safety of Jewish places of worship in France.
