Kyiv-based producer Dima, also known as BADWOR7H, recently spoke with Euronews about living in Ukraine during Russia’s full-scale invasion and the concept of ‘relative safety’. Dima began his musical journey at the age of 10, finding solace in music production as a form of escapism. Over time, he delved into the underground genre of Hard Bass but eventually grew disenchanted with the scene, leading to a shift in his musical career.
During the pandemic, Dima collaborated with a friend to produce an EP titled KYIVENERGO, which they originally began working on before the invasion. However, after Russia invaded, they changed the lyrics to Ukrainian from Russian. Following the invasion, Dima recalls waking up to explosions and the subsequent decision to flee to a town outside of Kyiv for safety, while his mother eventually left the country due to the ongoing conflict.
Despite the challenges of living in a warzone, Dima found solace in creating music as a coping mechanism. He noted the impact of the war on his emotions and music, describing a sense of ‘relative safety’ in navigating life in uncertain times. As Ukraine faced energy blackouts due to attacks on infrastructure, Dima struggled to maintain productivity but found music creation to be a source of stability in his life.
Amid the constant sound of air raid sirens in Kyiv, Dima shared how the war had influenced unexpected aspects of his music production. Despite the hardships of the ongoing conflict, he expressed a deep love for Kyiv and a sense of responsibility to those who depend on him, which has kept him rooted in the city despite the challenges. Through music, Dima continues to navigate the complex emotions of living in a war-torn country.
