Google reported in a research document that Iranian hackers attempted to target both President Trump and the Biden-Harris campaigns in May and June through a phishing operation. The hacking unit linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was behind the operation, with targets including personal email accounts of individuals associated with the campaigns and the U.S. government. Google blocked numerous login attempts and successfully secured a high-profile political consultant’s Gmail account. Reports of hacking threats to U.S. presidential campaigns surfaced last week, with Microsoft stating that hackers had breached the email account of a former senior adviser. The FBI is investigating efforts to hack both campaigns, but only the Trump campaign has claimed to have been hacked. The events follow warnings from a U.S. intelligence official about Iran’s potential to undermine Trump. Despite the hacking attempts, no major cybersecurity company or government agency has confirmed a successful hack of the Trump campaign. The matter remains under investigation by law enforcement agencies.
