NBC Connecticut: Customers Dissatisfied with Recent PURA Rate Increase on Electricity Bills

State regulators have approved a rate hike for both Eversource and United Illuminating, meaning higher electric bills for customers across Connecticut. The increase, set to start in September, is intended to offset $80 million for electric vehicle programs to support the state’s clean energy policy. This news comes on the heels of a recent increase in the public benefits portion of electric bills for both companies.

Eversource reports that typical residential customers using 700kwh a month will see an additional three dollars added to their bills each month through April 30th of next year. Many customers are already feeling the strain of rising costs, with some reporting their bills doubling in recent months.

Lawmakers are expressing frustration over the situation, with Republican lawmakers calling for surplus state money to be used to offset public benefit programs. Senate Democrats have also raised concerns, asking for a delay in the rate hike vote to prevent further financial strain on residents.

Customers are being urged to prepare for increased costs and potential financial duress as a result of the approved rate hikes. The Office of Consumer Counsel has filed an appeal to reconsider the hikes and find ways to help customers better understand their electric bills. It’s clear that residents in Connecticut will soon be paying more to keep their lights on at home.
