Australian Olympic breakdancer, Raygun, reveals the devastating impact of online hate

Australian Olympic breakdancer Rachael Gunn, also known as Raygun, expressed her devastation over the hate she has received for her routines at the Paris Games. Despite thanking her supporters for their positivity, Gunn revealed that the criticism has been overwhelming. Social media memes and skits mocking her dance moves went viral, with one particular move being dubbed the “kangaroo” in reference to her Australian heritage. Gunn defended her performance, stating that she worked hard and took the Olympics seriously. The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) released a statement confirming that Gunn was selected for the team through a transparent process and condemned false accusations regarding the selection process. Gunn also received support from the Australian Breaking Organization and the World DanceSport Federation.

Despite receiving zero points from Olympic judges, Gunn clarified that there are no official points in breaking, urging people to check the Olympics’ website for the judges’ evaluations. She also mentioned that she would address questions once she returns from a planned break in Europe. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Gunn for her effort and representing Australia on the Olympic stage. Gunn ended her post by asking for privacy for her family and the breaking community, as they have all been affected by the backlash she has faced.
