Jonathan Jacobson achieved a resounding victory in a Democratic primary over Rep. Anabel Figueroa, fueled by support from a popular mayor and a late-breaking controversy over antisemitic remarks made by Figueroa and one of her supporters. In the same primary, Rep. David Michel, another incumbent from Stamford, also suffered defeat. The results showed Jacobson winning with 63% of the vote and another newcomer, Eilish Collins Main, securing 56% to defeat Michel. The 15 Democratic primaries for seats in the General Assembly indicated that these victories could be a sign of potential wins in November.
Low turnout was observed in the primaries where early in-person voting was allowed, but some areas, like Hamden, saw more participation due to aggressive promotion by local officials. Some races, such as the one in the 91st House District to succeed retiring Rep. Michael D’Agostino, showed extremely close results between party-endorsed candidates and those endorsed by the Working Families Party.
The primaries also saw Sen. Herron Gaston of Bridgeport and Sen. Douglas McCrory of Hartford defeating their challengers. Notably, Rep. Bob Godfrey, D-Danbury, one of the longest-serving House members, managed to secure his seat against a challenger.
Overall, the primaries were a mix of victors and defeats for incumbents and newcomers alike, but the controversies surrounding antisemitic remarks added a unique layer of drama to these election results.
