Beacon Falls First Selectman Gerry Smith has conceded the primary race to his opponent Matthew Corey. Smith, who originally received the party convention endorsement, fell short in the primary despite hopes of using the endorsement to gain GOP voter confidence. Corey had enough delegate support from the state GOP convention in May, leading to the need for the primary. Smith acknowledged the gap in votes could not be overcome and officially conceded, throwing his support behind Corey for the upcoming election.
Smith expressed concerns about the low turnout in the GOP primary and emphasized the importance of voter outreach leading up to the general election. He plans to focus on public safety, the economy, and immigration to appeal to voters in November. Meanwhile, incumbent Senator Chris Murphy’s campaign manager expressed readiness for the general election, stating that Murphy is prepared to work hard to win reelection and support other Democrats on the ballot.
The primary campaign between Smith and Corey was described as clean and not getting personal, with both candidates aiming to focus on the issues facing the state. With the primary now behind them, both candidates are gearing up for the general election where Corey will face off against Senator Murphy in the hopes of securing a seat in the Senate.
