The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights has reported that 2,650 Palestinians taken from Gaza since October are still in Israeli custody and are being subjected to severe physical and psychological torture. The detainees have been exposed to harsh conditions, including threats of rape, death, and bombing, as well as being deprived of necessities like food, water, and sleep. The group estimates that at least 60 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody, with 48 of them being from Gaza. The Palestinian Prisoner’s Club has identified 22 Palestinians who died due to torture or medical negligence.
The report by Al Mezan echoes findings by the United Nations and other rights groups, highlighting a pattern of abuse that may amount to genocide. Recent footage from Israel’s Channel 12 showed sexual abuse inflicted on Palestinian detainees, drawing international condemnation. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also issued a report detailing torture and mistreatment faced by Palestinians since the October 7 conflict.
Israeli human rights group B’Tselem presented testimonies from Palestinians, including those from Gaza, who reported severe violence, sexual assault, starvation, and other abuses while in Israeli custody. B’Tselem called for the International Criminal Court to investigate individuals involved in these crimes, as the Israeli judicial system is perceived as supporting the torture camps. The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights is urging for accountability for these abuses and for the release of the remaining detainees from Gaza.
