Multiple agencies responded to a chemical fire at a FedEx shipping center in Windsor Locks, Connecticut on Wednesday morning. The fire officials started dealing with 5,000 pounds of two different chemical agents that spilled in a 40-foot tractor-trailer loading dock, making it a “major” hazmat situation. The spilled chemical was determined to be nitric acid by crews from DEEP, who stopped the leak and a permitted environmental contractor was brought in to clean up the spill. The incident was still active at 11 a.m. and required extensive emergency personnel from across the state.
As of 10:50 a.m., the road was reopened to traffic and businesses were allowed to reopen. Due to the need for many staff on scene, officers from other jurisdictions were temporarily present in town. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the issue was contained to the FedEx property, posing no danger to the general public. Operations at Bradley International Airport remained unaffected.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with chemical spills and the importance of a coordinated response from multiple agencies to ensure public safety. Stay updated with News 8 for further developments on this situation.
