Activists and doctors are organizing protests across India to demand justice for a female doctor who was raped and murdered while on duty in a hospital in Kolkata. The protests, titled “Reclaim the Night,” are expected in multiple states after two days of nationwide protests by doctors following the incident. The victim, a 31-year-old trainee doctor, was initially said to have committed suicide by hospital authorities but an autopsy confirmed she was raped and killed. Thousands of doctors marched in Kolkata, demanding better security measures and justice, leading to the case being transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) called for a nationwide halting of elective services in hospitals until their demands were met, including implementing the Central Protection Act to protect medical professionals from violence. While some doctors have called off the strike following assurances from the Health Minister, others continue to demand a central law to curb attacks on doctors. Protests have spread to various states in India, with concerns about the rising cases of sexual violence and lack of accountability for perpetrators. The case has raised questions about women’s safety and the politicization of the issue in West Bengal. This incident highlights the need for stronger measures to address sexual violence and ensure the safety of medical professionals in a country where such crimes continue to rise unabated.
