Black Hall Outfitters in Old Lyme, Connecticut, has experienced unexpected success after K-Pop stars Jungkook and Jimin from the band BTS visited the kayak shop last summer. The singers were featured in a Disney+ series called “Are You Sure?!” where they were seen wearing the shop’s “Salty to the Core” t-shirts with a crab design. When Jungkook flipped his kayak, the shop owner, Paul Ferreira, gave them the shirts, not expecting the massive impact it would have on his business.
Overnight, the shop sold out of the shirts and has since introduced new colors and limited editions to meet the increased demand. People from around the world are now coming to the shop, some even making pilgrimages to see where the filming took place and to sit in the same kayaks used by BTS. Fans of the band are also flocking to the shop in hopes of getting their own t-shirts.
Despite the unexpected success, Ferreira had designed the shirts long before the visit from the K-Pop stars. Seeing people from different countries posting pictures of themselves wearing the shirts on Instagram has been a rewarding experience for Ferreira, who is thrilled to see the positive impact BTS has had on his business. Overall, the shop owner is grateful for the exposure and newfound popularity that the visit from BTS has brought to Black Hall Outfitters.
