Connecticut Republicans are gearing up to pick nominees in state primaries on Tuesday to challenge longtime Democratic lawmakers, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes. Gerry Smith and Matt Corey will face off for the Republican nomination in the U.S. Senate primary, while Bob MacGuffie and Michael Goldstein vie for the nomination in the 4th Congressional District to challenge U.S. Rep. Himes.
In addition to these high-profile races, Connecticut voters will also be deciding a number of state legislative races. The Republican primary for U.S. Senate features Beacon Falls First Selectman Gerry Smith and conservative businessman Matthew Corey, who will go on to compete against Senator Murphy in the general election. Similarly, former Tea Party activist Bob MacGuffie is up against Dr. Michael Goldstein to challenge Rep. Himes in the general election.
The state primaries also include races for State Senate and State House seats, where incumbents and challengers will face off to secure their party’s nomination. For example, in the State Senate 2nd District, incumbent Democrat Doug McCrory will be challenged by Windsor Board of Education member Ayana Taylor and union leader Shellye Davis.
Overall, these state primaries are crucial for both parties, as they will determine the candidates who will compete in the general election in November. Stay tuned for the results in this pivotal election.
