After 900 days of war, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate. Ukraine launched a surprise incursion into the Russian region of Kursk, which has resulted in the loss of 28 settlements and the evacuation of over 121,000 residents. Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned the action, accusing Ukraine of trying to destabilize Russia and promising a “worthy response”.
On the ground in Ukraine, the International Atomic Energy Agency is investigating a fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, with both Moscow and Kyiv blaming each other for the incident. Meanwhile, Russian forces have taken control of the settlement of Lysychne in Donetsk.
In terms of diplomacy, China has called for de-escalation in light of the Kursk incursion, while a joint declaration signed by Swiss and Italian foreign ministers expressed concern over Russia’s aggression in Ukraine but suggested Moscow should be involved in peace talks.
In a separate development, state prosecutors in Ukraine have arrested government officials for allegedly accepting bribes, while a Russian court has sentenced a community leader to four years in prison for mocking troops fighting in Ukraine on social media.
Lastly, the United States has warned Iran against sending ballistic missiles to Russia, threatening a severe response that could undermine efforts to improve relations between Washington and Tehran. The situation in Eastern Europe remains tense as the conflict enters its 900th day.
