Ohio police officer Connor Grubb has been indicted on murder charges for the fatal shooting of pregnant 21-year-old Ta’Kiya Young in a grocery store parking lot. The incident occurred last August when officers confronted Young about shoplifting. Body camera footage shows officers repeatedly asking Young to get out of her vehicle, with one officer pointing a gun at her through the windshield. Young slowly accelerated her car towards an officer, who was struck, leading Grubb to fire a shot through the windshield, causing her death.
Grubb was indicted on four counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, and two counts of involuntary manslaughter. The grand jury’s decision was seen as a step towards justice by Young’s family, as they mourn the loss of the 21-year-old and her unborn daughter. The family’s attorney called the indictment a “solemn victory” but stressed that it was not the conclusion of their pursuit for justice.
Young was a mother of two boys, ages 3 and 6, and was expecting a daughter. Her grandmother, Nadine Young, expressed the devastation of losing a young unarmed Black woman in the shooting, leaving her two children without a mother. The community collectively recognized the incident as a murder that demands empathy and justice, as they mourned Young’s untimely death. Grubb was placed on administrative leave following the incident, while the other officer involved returned to duty after body camera footage showed no reason to keep him on leave.
