The death of a 53-year-old man, Frank Tyson, in police custody in Ohio has been ruled a homicide. Tyson died after being handcuffed and left face down at a bar in Canton in April. The autopsy report listed the causes of death as cardio pulmonary arrest, physical altercation, prone restraint, cocaine intoxication, and ethanol. In a video of the encounter, Tyson resisted being handcuffed and repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe. One officer appeared to put his knee on Tyson’s upper body while he was handcuffed face down. Tyson was motionless for more than 5 minutes before officers checked his pulse. He had been taken into custody after a car crash and was directed to the bar by a passing motorist. The officers involved, both white and hired in 2022, are on paid administrative leave. The homicide ruling does not necessarily mean a crime was committed. Officers were seen performing chest compressions on Tyson in the video while he was unresponsive. The incident has raised concerns about the use of force by law enforcement and the treatment of individuals in police custody.
