Uvalde student pleads to 911 dispatcher: “I don’t want to die” during mass shooting

The release of audio and video recordings, including 911 calls and body camera footage, from the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, 2022, has shed light on the delayed law enforcement response to the tragedy. As 19 students and two teachers were killed, terrified individuals inside the school begged for help while officers waited outside for more than 70 minutes before confronting the gunman. Families of the victims are seeking justice, accountability, and transparency for the slow police response that allowed the shooter to continue his rampage inside the school. The police response included Border Patrol agents and state police officials, with confusion and lack of urgency in setting up a command center contributing to the chaos. The incident eventually ended when the gunman was fatally shot by a tactical team at 12:50 p.m. While some officers are facing criminal charges for child abandonment and endangerment, families of the victims are also seeking legal action against law enforcement, social media companies, online gaming companies, and the gun manufacturer. The tragedy has once again brought to light issues with law enforcement training, communication, leadership, and decision-making in active shooter situations.
