Boston Red Sox Outfielder Jarren Duran Suspended for Using Homophobic Slur
The Boston Red Sox have taken action against Jarren Duran for using a homophobic slur during Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros. The outfielder has been issued an unpaid two-game suspension, with his salary for those games being donated to PFLAG (Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).
Duran directed the slur at a heckling fan during the game, which was caught on a hot mic. In a statement, Duran expressed remorse for his actions and apologized to the Red Sox organization and the LGBTQ community.
Despite this incident, Duran has been a key player for the Red Sox this season, with impressive statistics including a .291 batting average, 36 doubles, 13 triples, 14 home runs, and 58 RBI. He was also named the 2024 MLB All-Star Game MVP.
Duran’s suspension will begin on Monday, coinciding with the start of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers. The club’s decisive action sets an example of zero tolerance for discrimination in the sport.
