Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, has condemned the actions of senior politicians who she accused of trying to undermine the police during recent violent disorder. In an article in the Telegraph, she called for a restoration of respect for the police force and criticized those who have justified rioting by claiming to have legitimate concerns. Cooper stated that such attacks on local communities and law enforcement are a disgraceful assault on the rule of law itself, and that excuses for criminal behavior and thuggery are unacceptable. She also took aim at politicians who have engaged in what she termed as “shameful behavior” of undermining the police’s legitimacy and authority during a time when they needed full support to restore order on the streets.
In response to Cooper’s comments, Richard Tice, deputy leader of Reform UK, questioned when charges would be brought against individuals who attacked police officers at Manchester airport almost three weeks ago, highlighting a discrepancy in the response to different instances of violence.
Cooper’s article emphasized the need for collaboration with the police to address issues and raise standards, rather than blaming them from a distance. She concluded by stating that rebuilding trust in communities after recent events will require respect for the police, respect for the law, and respect for each other as a starting point.
