Australian b-girl Rachael Gunn, also known as Raygun, made headlines for her unique and artistic breaking performance at the sport’s Olympic debut in Paris. Despite not scoring any points in her battles against competitors from the US, France, and Lithuania, Gunn’s kangaroo-inspired routine went viral and drew a mixed reaction from online viewers. Critics questioned if her performance was a hoax, but Gunn remained undaunted and celebrated with her fellow Australian Olympians.
Gunn, a 36-year-old university lecturer with a Ph.D. in cultural studies, emphasized originality and creativity in her performance, paying tribute to her homeland by wearing an Australian Olympic tracksuit and incorporating slower, more artistic moves. While some praised her creativity, others criticized her performance for not meeting the athletic standards of her competitors.
The head judge of the Olympic breaking competition defended Gunn, stating that she brought something new to the table and showcased her originality by getting inspired by her surroundings, such as a kangaroo. Adele even mentioned Gunn’s performance as her favorite moment of the Paris Games during a concert in Munich.
Despite facing abusive comments online, Gunn’s courage and unique approach to breaking have garnered support from the international breaking community and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The World DanceSport Federation has offered her mental health support, emphasizing the importance of self-expression and pushing the boundaries of the sport. While breaking may not be featured in the 2028 Olympics, efforts are being made to include it in the 2032 Games in Brisbane, Australia. Gunn continues to inspire others to embrace their individuality and represent themselves authentically.
